Is there a season for the deer there? License needed? Or are they considered nuisance animals that need controlling?

Went back today with working rifle. Rem700 heavy barreled 22-250, the young fallow buck at 275ish yards didn't know what hit him... My mate stayed on mortitions slab( my sniping spot) and I did the two hour return trip to retrieve deer. As I carting meat back up steep hill I seemed to remember telling myself the last time I did it,NOT to do it again.... By hoki the eye fillets were great for my dinner tonight. Mate fired 20 odd rounds and converted a few live wallabies into good wallabies. Fair knackered when I got home but had great day.

What bullet and weight are you using in the 22-250? This year my province began allowing 22 center fire for big game so been thinking of going that route in deer season for my Whitetail.

Well Vince I'm not sure if my son will want to try his 222 or what the twist rate it is. Have to check that before deciding on a bullet I suppose. Most of our shots are under 200 yards but 400 is possible.I have a 22 wildcat and some 77 grain Barnes LRX that I am testing. They should work pretty good.
I am starting to collect and develop loads for all my guns with non lead bullets. I figure it's just a matter of time till the mandate reaches out here and I want to be ready and have a stash on hand.

I was deer hunting with a good mate, no longer with us rest his soul, some years ago and he took a fallow doe cleanly at around 230 metres with his .223 firing 55gr SP projectiles. Having said that, good bullet placement is critical especially considering a whitetail deer is bigger and heavier in the body than a fallow deer.
Not sure I would consider the 222 as being an adequate deer rifle, even with heavier projectiles.

well I run 50,52,53,55,63&70 but load in question was 53 GRN HP Berger. The 1:14 twist means if I want heavier than 55grn. There are three main choices. 60 GRN Hornady flat base. Sierra 63grn or the flying brick, the awesome old school 70grn Speer flat base semi point.

The 222 kills deer deader than a dead thing IF you hit them in right place mate. Trouble with lead free options is the length....a 1:14 struggles with much heavier than 45 grain Barnes. My 223 is 1:10 and loves the 50grnttsx. If you can find a stumpy blunter option it may work ok up close...but Barnes need speed to open up. Lots more options out there now but I keep ranges short with 222/223 as in under 150 normally/ideally. If however you have a 1:7/1:8 twist you have many options up to 80 grns that will work out further than I will shoot wee calibres.

Isn't the 222 and 223 pretty close in performance?

It sounds like his 222 might not be a good option (might be a project to rebarrel with a faster twist rate). In my mind I would think a bullet in the 70 grain class would be better. Ah well, just speculating, I don't know if he wants to try it.
I will with my wildcat, speed shouldn't be an issue. I have a load with the 90 grain Berger doing 2965 fps. The 77 grain Barnes should top 3000 might get to 3100 or so. That should be good out to 300 yards at least. Of course with proper shot placement. I know the Berger is a target bullet - not going hunting with it.
