WOW…we had a really nasty storm come through yesterday afternoon. Very strong wind, extremely heavy rain and what started as pea sized hail increased to marble size the bloody huge! Some hail stones where more than 8cm round, over 3 inches in diameter! We now have broken roof tiles, internal water damage and my car copped a direct hit on the windshield…a crazy circular crack.
Luckily Volvo make a rather solid laminated windshield. Had it been just toughened glass, my car would have filled up with water (yep, the rain was that intense) and I’d have one helluva mess to clan up today because the hailstone would have gone straight through.

Word has it we can expect more later today. I hope we don’t get the massive hail stones though!

Shocked Wow! I hope that you don't have any more damage, and that you can get what has happened fixed quickly.

By my math, a 3" diameter sphere of ice would weigh 7.5 ounces or 213 grams.

OK, my math nerdiness kicked in...

According to NOAA, a hailstone 2 to 4" in diameter falls between 65 and 106 ft/sec, depending on actual shape and a number of other factors.
www.nssl.noaa.gov/educ...x101/hail/

That means that a 7.5 ounce hailstone would hit with 31 to 82 ftlbs.

I need to spend more time on my hobbies... Wink

That would be about right I reckon mate. When you consider the Volvo windshield is laminated glass, and the diameter of the shockwave when it hit, then the energy on hitting could possibly exceed those figures. Confused Shocked wtf

FAAARK !!
That would give you a big headache if you are out and about.
I hope your insurance cover this fast mate.

Crazy weather lately.
We had a few tiny ones compared to yours down here in Sydney, about 2 cm pebbles. Only about 5 minutes worth and no damages to our stuff.

Well sh!t
I spoken too early.
This afternoon 25km north from me got hit by freak storm.
Golfball sized hail and over 100 trees blown down causing many houses and electric line down. Even one fatality.

Crazy weather indeed.

Gee mate, 2cm hail is nothing to sneeze about…that’s just under an inch in size.
Just as the huge hail started here, a guy just wearing a singlet and helmet rode past on his motorcycle. He must have made it home ok because we’ve not heard of anything nasty.

It’s crazy weather indeed mate, and the climate fools will be out in droves now blaming global warming for the weather. Stupid part about it is “warming” and hail are exact opposites.

There have been a couple of volcanic eruptions around the world lately…not sure if they have anything to do with the weather being as it is, but every volcanic eruption, even just a “burp”, puts more so-called green house gases in the atmosphere than man has done in the last thousand years or more.
