A friend of mine just aquired an old .38-.55 Winchester lever gun that was in his family for many years. He asked me today at work if I could find out what type of powder Winchester uses in their current factory loads. He bought a couple of boxes so he could shoot them up and start reloading for it. Anyone have any idea? Thanks fellas!

No idea what Winchester uses, But I load for my Winchester 38-55 with 255gr Speer Flat points and I use IMR 3031.

Here's another one from a SASS shooter:

Bullet: Barnes JFP
Bullet Weight: 255 grs
Powder: Hodgdon H4198
Powder Weight: 28 grs
Primer: CCI 200
Brass Make: Winchester
C.O.L: 2.62 in.

This is one of those cartridges that can be loaded hotter in a single shot falling block.

If your friend just wants to try the gun out, he might look at Black Hill Ammunition. They use cast bullets and have good accuracy.
